PREPARING FOR THE SORT (3 Minutes)
  • Check-in from previous Lesson Refining Protocol (LRP), if applicable
  • Review protocol and guidelines

Lesson Presentation (5 minutes)
  • Presenter describes:
    • Standards (what students are expected to know and be able to do)
    • Assessment Goals (evidence demonstrated to indicate proficiency)
    • Literacy Strategies (integrated in service of learning goals)
    • Assignments (pre- and post- lesson)
  • Participants listen and take notes

CLARIFYING QUESTIONS (3 minutes)
  • Participants ask clarifying questions
  • Facilitator assesses which questions belong in the feedback portion of the protocol

Examination of the Lesson (5 minutes)
  • Presenter is silent
  • Copies of the lesson are provided for all participants
  • Participants read and discuss the plan

FEEDBACK Circle (5 minutes)
  • Presenter is silent
  • Facilitator invites participants to provide affirmative feedback about the lesson (plan construction, alignment with standards, rigor, potential for engagement of students, etc.)
  • Affirmative Feedback statement stems might include:

  • Presenter speaks to questions/comments brought about in the feedback circle
  • Facilitator may intervene to focus
  • Participants are silent

Debrief (5 minutes)
  • Facilitator opens the floor for an open discussion of the protocol process
  • Participants publicly commit to a suggestion or idea from the process they will take forward in their own work
  • Facilitator records commitments to common, public log for follow-up
