Arts for All! Summary

The Arts for All! project aims to expand access to high-quality, arts-integrated learning for approximately 2,700 K–8 students across Michigan. Through professional development, collaboration with cultural organizations, and the dissemination of Artful Reading classroom modules and Artful Reading on the Go family-learning kits, the project integrates literacy and the arts to strengthen students’ access to and confidence in the arts, while accelerating the development of students’ literacy abilities, and supporting student civic identity and social-emotional well-being.

The initiative focuses on building the capacity of teachers and school leaders through training and coaching, increasing the participation of underserved students in arts-based learning, and engaging families and communities through arts and literacy events.

Partnerships with local arts institutions, libraries, and other civic organizations ensure statewide impact and access to rich cultural experiences.

Artful reading has been a pleasure to implement. My students have loved working with the different media and being able to express their responses in a meaningful way. These lessons require critical thinking skills and are very engaging. They are a win win for everyone!

Artful Reading Teacher

what is artful reading

A Framework for Literacy and Arts-integration

Artful Reading, created by the Collaborative for Teaching and Learning (CTL), brings dance, music, drama, media, and visual arts to the heart of learning. Built on the belief that creativity fuels curiosity and deep understanding, each module and family kit invites students, teachers, and families to learn through making and performing art.

Designed by CTL arts and literacy specialists in collaboration with community arts partners, the program blends hands‑on experiences with the work of artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe, Jackson Pollock, and Nancy Schön. Students paint, move, act, compose, and imagine as they explore how art shapes who we are and how we see the world.
