The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle takes students on an adventure
through the life cycle of a butterfly supported with rich, colorful artwork. As
students journey through this module, they will experience this life cycle
first hand through the lens of a scientist as they observe a real life butterfly
habitat, noting and acting out the transformations they witness taking place
over time. They will take a close look at Eric Carle’s vibrant artwork and
intensely study collage art along with other well-known collage artists. Math
and science both find themselves interwoven in the module to help
enhance students’ comprehension of the core text. Through experiences
around reading, speaking and listening, vocabulary, and writing, students
will become butterfly experts fluttering with knowledge.
