GEAR UP Kentucky

GEAR UP KYCTL is a partner with the Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education in a $26.9 million six-year grant for GEAR UP, or Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs, from the United States Department of Education. Kentucky was one of only 19 states of 47 that held prior GEAR UP grants to receive a new state GEAR UP award from the USDOE.

GEAR UP Kentucky supports the shared goals of the national GEAR UP program, to increase college readiness especially for underserved students, and also the goals of Kentucky’s college readiness legislation, known as Senate Bill 1. The project works with 49 schools in 22 districts throughout the state, both urban, suburban and rural, and serves approximately 10,000 students, who receive services starting in the seventh grade through their final year in high school.

CTL works with GEAR UP Kentucky to help schools meet state college and career readiness requirements through increased rigor for all students, implementation of the Common Core State Standards, and alignment of instructional practice with Kentucky’s Professional Growth and Effectiveness System (PGES). CTL has provided planning assistance for leadership teams from all GEAR UP Kentucky schools and other stakeholders, and has gathered and analyzed data from nearly 50 school walkthroughs to inform instruction through concrete action steps. In addition, in five GEAR UP Kentucky schools participating in a study of the impact of extra instructional support on student outcomes and college readiness, CTL is providing professional learning and teacher coaching to promote student growth and meet district needs in literacy and mathematics.  Finally, CTL is working with GEAR UP KY to emphasize student advisement as a college readiness strategy, and to help schools rethink the role of the counselor.

Who benefits

CTL’s work with GEAR UP Kentucky benefits 10,000 students, teachers, counselors and administrators in 22 urban and rural school districts throughout Kentucky, helping them to build and sustain a college-going culture for all.

In addition, CTL works directly with GEAR UP Kentucky staff, providing technical assistance, collecting and helping to analyze and apply data to inform project planning, and developing and delivering professional and leadership development to help facilitate project management and implementation.
