Artful Reading for Striving Readers, Kentucky 2018

CTL’s Artful Reading program helps K-5 classroom teachers to implement modules that use shared literacy development and arts activities to promote deep student learning. Each kit contains a picture book, supplemental texts, art materials, and lesson plans to deliver the contents of the module. This field-tested and piloted curriculum model, reinforced through Professional Learning and coaching, draws on state and national standards in literacy and the arts and on research-based teaching techniques and supports enhanced instruction in both. The model is designed to increase the capacity of elementary classroom teachers to boost the level and quality of standards-based reading and arts instruction in the elementary classroom, and to support integration of the arts into literacy instruction.

Each module taps into the classroom teacher’s prior knowledge about literacy instruction and arts integration. The materials are built around a structure for pre-, mid-, and post-reading that addresses key literacy developmental skills (including phonics, vocabulary development, comprehension, speaking, listening, observing, writing), using arts-based strategies and contexts to deeply engage students in learning. In addition to providing opportunities for core arts experiences, the materials immerse students and teachers in learning in, through and about the arts, using arts-based activities to introduce high quality literature, set schema for student learning, and provide avenues for demonstrating learning through the arts.

Students are engaged in thinking about language and texts through arts-based experiences focused on: development of visual imagery, prediction, inference, character traits, analysis, questioning, creating, and synthesis. CTL builds on brain-based research to use arts integration to improve comprehension and long-term retention of the content of each module.

Artful Reading aims to improve the skills of teachers to successfully and reciprocally link the arts and literacy to promote student learning in both domains. In addition Artful Reading professional learning works to improve the ability of teachers to implement quality lessons, and transfer their knowledge to the ongoing literacy instruction. In this way, Artful Reading focuses intensively on deep teacher knowledge, and on the intentional building of local instructional capacity that enhances the role of the arts in schools. Artful Reading networks teachers across grade levels and combines formal training with job-embedded coaching and modeling to ensure that local capacity is built to sustain and grow the use of the program as a deliberate component of literacy instruction in the school.

Each Artful Reading teacher will receive two days of foundational knowledge training and on-going coaching support to implement each module. In addition, on-going professional learning supports teachers in using reflection to refine implementation, and build on their understanding of the national arts standards to  deliver engaging literacy activities. All of CTL’s professional learning models meet the Learning Forward Professional Learning Standards for effective student learning.
