Catherine RArts and Literacy Consultant

”I love building relationships and working with people in the field—exchanging ideas and exploring and looking at the ways the arts can help people think in different ways.”

Catherine has always loved stories—the true stories of people’s lives and work, and the stories they create through the arts. “I’ve always looked at the arts as helping people find their voice,” she says, and notes with excitement the educators who have successfully infused the arts into their teaching with her help. She is particularly interested in the ways that coaching enables educators to shift their thinking and try new approaches in all content areas.

Catherine developed and field tested CTL’s Artful Reading model, which uses award-winning picture books about the arts to develop literacy skills in primary grades students, including a pilot test that was part of the federal Promise Neighborhoods planning grant. Catherine also co-developed CTL’s Striving Readers literacy coaching model, and served as a mentor coach to colleagues and school literacy coaches involved in the project.  She served as a lead facilitator and coach for CTL’s community college content literacy work, supporting instructors in the development of effective teaching strategies. Catherine also served as a mentor coach for CTL’s Different Ways of Knowing (DWoK) work around the United States, and has trained artists working in schools to integrate the arts across content areas.

A talented artist in her own right, Catherine has served as an artist-in-residence for the Kentucky Arts Council, and as director of the weaving program at the Hindman Settlement School in eastern Kentucky. She attended folk schools in the United States and Denmark, and has been featured as an artist on Kentucky Educational Television (KET) and in the KET Visual Arts Toolkit.
