Dr. Kent McGuire is President of the Southern Education Foundation in Atlanta, Georgia, where he guides that organization’s mission to advance equity and excellence in education in the American South. Dr. McGuire formerly served as Dean of the College of Education at Temple University, where he was also a tenured professor in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. He served as Assistant Secretary of the US Department of Education under President Clinton. Dr. McGuire was also an Education Program Officer for the Pew Charitable Trusts, and Education Program Director for the Eli Lilly Endowment.
A former member of the CTL Advisory Board, Dr. McGuire is the author of numerous policy reports, book chapters and professional journal articles. In addition to CTL’s Board of Directors, he serves on the boards of the Institute for Education Leadership, The New Teacher Project, the Board of Managers of Girard College, and the Free Library of Philadelphia Foundation. He holds a PhD in public administration from the University of Colorado at Boulder, an MA in education administration and policy from Columbia University Teachers College, and a BA in economics from the University of Michigan.
