Ashley Perkins
Educational Programs Consultant
Language Arts Specialist
“Adolescent literacy is my joy and passion.”
A lover of literature who spent a college semester in England studying the classics, Ashley understands that students must first master basic literacy skills to fully appreciate anything they read. While teaching English and serving as a Writing Cluster Leader and literacy coach at Shelby County (Kentucky) High School, Ashley says, “I began re-examining the way I was teaching.” When she started graduate study that would lead to National Board Certification, qualifying her to teach English in all 50 states, Ashley welcomed the opportunity to refine her approach to getting students excited about reading.
At CTL, Ashley is an energetic mentor coach to Kentucky teachers in the federally funded Striving Readers adolescent literacy project, and to Kentucky Community and Technical College System instructors working with students to develop the skills to successfully transition to postsecondary education. She has also developed lessons and programs that emphasize language arts and literacy skills for CTL’s work with the GEAR UP Kentucky college readiness program.
Ashley is a native of Bowling Green, Kentucky, and has accompanied high school students to Australia, Europe and Great Britain as part of the People to People International program. She is married and the proud mom of daughters Sadie and Lilah, and the family’s beloved white boxer, Luna.
