Adolescent Literacy Model Tools and Processes

Adolescent Literacy Model Tools and Processes

CTL's Adolescent Literacy Model provides a range of tools and processes to supplement formal training and informal, job-embedded professional learning.  These include:

  • An Adolescent Literacy School Performance Guide that helps schools self-assess their current status on the six research-based components of the model
  • An Adolescent Literacy Classroom Observation tool for assessing fidelity of implementation
  • An Adolescent Literacy Sorting Protocol for examining student work
  • A set of published Adolescent Literacy Model guidebooks to support teachers and principals in implementing the Adolescent Literacy Model

CTL staff works closely with middle and high school faculties in implementing thet Adolescent Literacy Model through:

  • Summer Adolescent Literacy Institutes
  • Full and half-day training sessions throughout the year
  • On-site and distance coaching

Together, these tested tools and professional development approaches support efforts to develop professional practice that leads to increased student literacy.  CTL mentor coaches begin by working closely with teachers, while development the ability of school-based literacy coaches and principals to lead improved instruction.  Over time, a gradual release approach supports coaches and principals more directly as these key staff assume responsibility for improved classroom practice through implementation of the Adolescent Literacy Model.  CTL builds a school's capacity not only to achieve success, but to sustain it long after we've left the building.
