Free Adolescent Literacy Services from CTL

January 25, 2010

We think you would agree that adolescent literacy development is a critical need for secondary schools.

For the past five years, CTL has been a partner in one of only eight  federal Striving Readers grants, working in 21 middle and high schools in seven school districts throughout Kentucky, to improve the literacy skills of adolescents.  The work is funded by the USDOE and results are showing impressive progress.

At the core of Kentucky’s Striving Readers project is CTL’s Adolescent Literacy Model.

Later this spring, schools will have an opportunity to apply for funding assistance to improve their adolescent literacy program.  CTL has scheduled FREE Adolescent Literacy Awareness Sessions to be held during the month of March, 2010.  All session will be held at CTL in Louisville.

CTL is pleased to contribute these awareness sessions designed to assist schools and districts with making more informed and targeted applications under federal or state education stimulus funding categories.

About the Sessions

Each three-hour session will provide an intense workshop with CTL staff experts in adolescent literacy. CTL will provide print materials about the and school assessment process.

Sessions will involve the following:

  • Brief background about CTL’s Adolescent Literacy and results from Kentucky’s Striving Readers Grant project.

  • A review of how CTL’s Adolescent Literacy fits with RttT funding and other education stimulus fund categories (Title I School Improvement Grants, Investing in Innovation [i3] Grants, and Pending LEARN Grants).

  • What We’re Doing and Not Doing: A School Self-Assessment Process: Use of CTL’s Adolescent Literacy School Performance Guide (© 2010) to inform your school’s application under RttT and other stimulus fund categories.

  • Next steps.
