Starr Lewis is the Assistant to the Dean for Teacher Education Partnerships and clinical associate professor at the University of Louisville. Prior to joining the faculty at U of L, Starr served as Associate Commissioner for the Office of Teaching and Learning with the Kentucky Department of Education. As Associate Commissioner she led the work of that office which included all curriculum areas and all levels, early childhood through high school. Central to the curriculum work of the Office is the development of content and performance standards. In addition, a major focus of the office is the collection and development of instructional, curricular and assessment tools and resources for teachers.
During her tenure as associate commissioner, Starr also served on Kentucky Educational Television’s (KET) Advisory Board. She worked on many collaborative projects with the Professional Development Division at KET.
Starr received her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kentucky and her Master of Arts teaching degree from the University of Louisville. Prior to working at the Kentucky Department of Education, she taught English and psychology for 17 years. She joined the state department in 1991 as a regional writing consultant and later served as director of the Kentucky Writing Program, and Humanities branch manager overseeing the curriculum areas of English/language arts, social studies, arts and humanities, and world language.
Starr and her husband Chuck live in Louisville.
