Kentucky Writing Portfolio

From 2007 to 2009 CTL partnered with the Kentucky Department of Education (KDE) on the oversight and administration of the Kentucky Writing Portfolio, a component of the Commonwealth Accountability Testing System (CATS).   CTL also designed and delivered professional development related to implementation of the Writing Portfolio.  CTL led the design and development of the DVD Teaching the Writer: What Students Need, an instructional aid distributed to teachers throughout Kentucky.

Kentucky Mathematics and Science Partnership (MSP)

Through a two-year grant from the KDE, and in partnership with Morehead State University and Knott County Schools in Kentucky, CTL is leading professional development to improve teacher content knowledge and instructional practice in mathematics and science in a high-need rural Kentucky school district.

Kentucky Content Literacy Initiative

Through a two-year grant from the KDE, CTL is a partner with the Western Kentucky Educational Cooperative, Murray State University and Paducah Independent Schools in a two-year, Kentucky Content Literacy Initiative grant aimed at improving adolescent literacy instruction across all content areas.

Elementary School Arts Accountability Evaluation Project

From 2007 to 2008, the KDE hired CTL to conduct a pilot evaluation of its prototype elementary arts accountability model.  The new model was designed to enable elementary schools to determine the effectiveness of their current arts programs.  The model used a standards and indicators tool and a planning protocol designed to engage multiple school personnel in project oversight.   KDE's goal was with the prototype was to develop Kentucky's first ever document delineating the critical elements of a comprehensive elementary arts program based on the Kentucky Program of Studies.

Closing the Achievement Gap

In 2005, the KDE piloted a prototype tool developed by CTL called Closing the Gap. This district and school resource was designed to provide leaders with a new approach to achievement gap issues and practical steps to begin discussing these issues in light of race, socioeconomic status and disability. The pilot was conducted with training provided by CTL for 20 Kentucky Highly Skilled Educators and GAP Coordinators statewide.

Guide to Reflective Classroom Performance

In 2002, CTL worked with the KDE to develop a Guide to Reflective Classroom Performance that was piloted with Kentucky teachers to support their understanding of best practices and their ability to accurately reflect on their own professional learning needs. The guide helped teachers to become reflective and responsive learners, and to make better informed decisions about their own needs for professional development.

CTL Advisory Board

The KDE was one of the original state-level organizations to serve on CTL's advisory board, and was instrumental in the development of the 1996 Arts, ure and Technology plan for Kentucky, a plan designed and implemented by the Galef Institute and CTL .
